You know how much I love auctions and Banksy so that’s enough reason to explain why I’m bringing you this breaking news… a once-in-a-lifetime auction of the “Spy Booth” mural as a hybrid NFT happened a couple of weeks ago.

This past weekend the brick remains and a 1-of-1 NFT of the controversial Banksy Spy Booth was stolen at auction, considering recent pieces by the lowbrow artist have gone for millions such as the Love Is In The Bin, the famous shredded version of Banksy’s Girl With A Balloon going for 1.4 million USD or Love is in the Air going for 12.5 million USD then most notably, Game Changer closing at 22.8 million.

The 9-brick remains of Spy Booth salvage the spy’s faces (Edward Snowden and Julian Assange) were legally granted to the owner of the building after a construction debacle. Long story short, the owner grew curious about his/hers newfound property and sought out the best candidate to find a worthy buyer, a start-up called Cosmic Wire.

Navigating the NFT metaverse, with prior success selling a hybrid NFT from a painting by the GRAMMY-nominated rock n’ roll artist, Ruby Mazur for 1.1 million USD, Cosmic Wire took the risky opportunity and succeeded, selling the hybrid Banksy NFT for 610,000 USD. However, the real winner was the buyer who will pay the reasonable amount with both cryptocurrency and USD. In the spirit of Banksy, 100% of the downstream residual payments on the NFT market will go to Coalition for Rainforest Nations.

By making the Banksy Spy Booth NFT available in USD, Cosmic Wire hopes to bridge the gap between fiat and non-fungible tokens to help sustain and evolve the NFT ecosystem. Further encouraging more participation in the NFT market, Cosmic Wire created ‘Spy Games’ to win a Banksy Spy Booth NFT.

“Banksy is one of the most notoriously infamous and provocative artists of our generation. The fact that Cosmic Wire is involved in this at all is profoundly humbling. It is especially so with this specific piece. Rumored to be lost forever, we have found it,” said Cosmic Wire CEO Jerad Finck. “We wanted to pay homage to the original Spy Booth, so we created a new piece of digital art based on what remains of the wall.”

Finck continued, “We are genuinely excited to play a small part in time capsuling this crescendo of human culture and bringing it back to the people. This is what our mission at Cosmic Wire is specifically, to preserve and disseminate humanity’s finest achievements”.
